Our Trusted Partner: Saurashtra Medical & Educational Charitable Trust (SMECT)
Life Global Canada partners with Saurashtra Medical & Educational Charitable Trust (SMECT), one of Gujarat’s most established charitable organizations. For more than 48 years, SMECT has delivered measurable impact across rural education, women’s empowerment, voluntary blood banking, and Thalassemia prevention throughout Gujarat, India.
With outreach to more than 9.8 million people, SMECT has built a proven track record of delivering sustainable community programs. Rather than partnering with a newly formed organization, we chose an experienced nonprofit with decades of demonstrated results, strong governance, and recognized accountability.
A track record we vetted, not just a name we trust:
- 119 rural government primary schools rebuilt, featuring modern classrooms, smart learning technology, improved sanitation facilities, sports infrastructure, and enhanced safety measures.
- India’s first standalone blood bank to receive the ISBT Award for Developing Countries (2020), recognizing excellence in voluntary blood banking.
- A Thalassemia Prevention Program operating since 1993, providing public awareness initiatives and large-scale screening programs for at-risk communities.
- A Women’s Vocational Skills Program that has trained more than 14,000 women since 2008, achieving an employment placement rate of approximately 90%.
- Active compliance with India’s Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), 80G charitable tax-exemption status, and CSR Implementer Certification, demonstrating strong financial and regulatory governance.
How Our Partnership Works
Life Global Canada’s current grant to SMECT supports the rebuilding of a rural government primary school in Gujarat. To ensure transparency and accountability, grant funds are released in stages based on verified construction milestones. Each funding phase requires documented evidence through photographs, videos, site inspections, or independent third-party verification, along with detailed financial reporting.
This oversight process follows the same accountability principles required by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for Canadian registered charities funding international charitable projects.
